How to Apply

Admission by Recommendation/Regular Admission

Admission by Recommendation application period:
    September 1, 2011 to February 29, 2012

Regular Admission application period:
    September 1, 2011 to February 29, 2012

(For those applying directly from overseas (Including those who will come to Japan with the temporary visa), the deadline for both Admission by Recommendation and Regular Admission is December 26, 2011)

*Admission may be closed before the above deadlines if the number of applications exceeds the number of spots available in each department.

How to Apply
Prospective students may apply to Tokyo Design Academy by Admission by Recommendation or Regular Admission.
◎The screening fees (20,000 JPY) is waived for recommended applicants.

◎Under the “International Student Financial Aid Program,” half of the entrance fee (90,000yen) is waived for all successful international student applicants.

Admission by
Recommendation

●Admission by Recommendation consists of the following three application processes:

School Recommendation
The applicant must be recommended by an instructor from the Japanese Language school or other facility they are currently attending or have graduated from.

In addition, they must meet the following requirements:

  • TDA is the applicant’s first-choice school.
  • A deep interest in design, an attitude that is motivated to dedicate oneself to study with the goal of future professional work, and a character that is especially fitting to TDA. 
  • Is recommended by an instructor from the Japanese Language school or other facility the student is currently attending or has graduated from.

TDA Recommendation
Applicants who have attended an admission event (trial admission, open campus, or presentation) or a tour at TDA may apply.

(3)
Self-Recommendation

The applicant recommends himself for admission.
Anyone with a deep interest in design and an attitude that is motivated to dedicate oneself to study with the goal of future professional work.

Transcript/

Diploma
・Grade transcript from last school attended.
・Diploma from last school attended.
*Please submit both the original item and a Japanese translation.
*You do not need to submit a transcript in Japanese If the original transcript is in English.
*The Japanese translation must be certified by the translation institute (Japanese Language school, etc.) where it was translated.

Proof of Japanese Language Ability

*Applicants should submit the following documents:

1) At least six months continuous study at a Japanese Language school or other facility certified by the Association for the Promotion of Japanese Language Education.

→・Grade transcript and attendance certificate from Japanese Language school.

・Certificate of graduation (completion of program) or certificate of expected graduation (completion of program) from a Japanese Language school.

2) N1 or N2 qualification on the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) given by Japan Educational Exchanges and Services or the Japan Foundation.
→ Certificate stating that the applicant has passed N1 or N2. *Please submit the original document.

3) A minimum grade of 200 points in listening comprehension, listening and reading comprehension, and reading comprehension on the Japan Student Services Organization’s Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students “Japanese as a Foreign Language” test.
→Written notification of test grade. *Please submit the original document.

4) Those who have had education for a full year or more in a school specified in Japan's School Education Act Article 1, excluding kindergarten.
→Present a document showing that the applicant had been enrolled in the school for a full year or more, such as credits, etc.

Proof of Ability to Pay Tuition, Living Expenses
Proof of remittance, bank account balance statement, etc.
*Please submit proof of your bank account balance current as of the day of application.
*If the above documents do not offer proof of your ability to cover tuition and living expenses while in Japan, you may be asked to submit your benefactor’s certificate of employment or bank account balance statement, etc.

Photographs
2 copies (4 cm tall x 3 cm wide) of a photograph taken within the past three months, showing your head and shoulders, with no background.

Other
Please submit originals of the following items:
・Alien Registration Certificate
・Passport
・Permission to Engage in an Activity Other Than That Permitted by the Status of Residence Previously Granted (if applicable)
・National Health Insurance Certificate

*For those applying for Admission by Recommendation, along with the above items (1) – (6), please submit the following form that corresponds to your method of application:

①School Recommendation → Designated School Recommendation Form
②TDA Recommendation → Certificate of Attendance (handed out to attendees of one of TDA’s admission events or campus tours)
③Self-Recommendation → Designated Self-Recommendation Form
Screening Fee 20,000 yen
*The screening fee is waived for recommended applicants.
How to Submit Your Application International student applications will be taken at the appropriate window. (Except for those applying directly from overseas)
Please place the necessary forms and the screening fee (Regular admission) in the envelope and bring them to TDA.

*Please pay the screening fee (Regular admission) in cash.

Application Forms

(1)

Admission Application

Fill in all required items (including the back of the form) and attach a photograph.
* You do not have to fill in your residence status, period of stay, alien registration card number or the date when your residency period expires.
(2)

Transcript / Diploma

・Grade transcript from last school attended.
・Diploma from last school attended. (if you cannot obtain a certificate of your diploma, a copy is acceptable).
* Please submit both the original items along with a Japanese translation.
* You do not need to submit the transcript or diploma in Japanese if the original items are in English.
* Graduates of Chinese universities (including colleges) should submit an original copy of their academic verification report issued by the China Higher Education Student Information and Career Center (Department of Education Certification Center) or the China Academic Degrees & Graduate Education Development Center.

Proof of Japanese Language Ability

* Submit as many of the following three documents as you can.

1) Those with at least six months continuous study at a Japanese Language school or other facility certified by the Association for the Promotion of Japanese Language Education.

Proof of Ability to Pay Tuition / Living Expenses
Proof of employment, proof of income (document proving income for a one year period) and proof of bank account balance of your benefactor (person paying the tuition fee).

Photographs
Two copies (4cm long x 3cm wide) of a photograph taken within the past three months showing your head and shoulders, with a blank background.
* Write your name and the department you wish to join on the back of both photographs and attach one to your admission application.
(6)
Passport (Copy)
Submit a photocopy of all pages including the pages showing your passport number and photograph, your record of embarkation / disembarkation, visa status and so on. (We may require you to resubmit pages which are unclear.)

Application Under Admission by Recommendation
* For those applying for Admission by Recommendation, along with the above items (1) – (6), please submit the following form that corresponds to your method of application:
1) School Recommendation → Designated School Recommendation Form (set format; can be written in English)
2) TDA Recommendation → Certificate of Attendance (handed out to attendees of one of TDA's admission events or campus tours)
3) Self-Recommendation → Designated Self-Recommendation Form (set format; composition of 150 words)
Screening Fee 20,000 yen (Regular Admissions only)
* The screening fee is waived for recommended applicants.
* Pay by bank transfer at the same time that you make your application.

How to Submit Your Application Send all of your documents in one parcel to TDA by post.
(Those who wish to bring them to the school in person should contact the school in advance)

Screening Process Screening is by examination of your documents, interview and a Japanese efficiency test (those with N2 or higher in the Japanese Language Proficiency Test or 200 points or higher in the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students are exempted from the efficiency test).
* The date and method of the test will be notified to you after your documents for application is received.
* In principle there is no need to come to Japan for the entrance test.
Enrollment Procedures Successful applicants will be sent a notification of such along with information on paying the tuition fee. Pay the tuition fee by bank transfer to TDA's designated bank account by the specified day. Store the receipt issued by the bank after payment of your tuition fee in a safe place.
* Your tuition fee minus the entrance fee will be returned to you if you request a cancellation of your enrollment by March 31, 2011.
Miscellaneous Details 1) Those applying under the Entrance Scholarship System should include the Entrance Scholarship Application along with their admission application.
2) An Entrance Fee Reduction / Exemption System is available to those with a relative who is studying or has graduated from TDA. For more details, please contact the Admissions Inquiries Office.
